Halloween Edit: The Scary Chemicals Inside Beauty Products

We’re talking about the horrifying chemicals inside traditional beauty products.

Are you a fan of Halloween or not? Either way, we think this spooky time of year is the perfect chance to share something scarier than carved pumpkins and ghosts!

What’s that you may ask? We’re talking about the horrifying chemicals inside traditional beauty products…

PARABENS

Usually ending in “yl” (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl…). Although they’re not always labelled, parabens are used as preservatives and may contribute to hormone imbalance. Found almost everywhere, including skin care products such as moisturisers.

SILOXANES

Look for ingredients ending in "-siloxane" or "-methicone".

Siloxanes are used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten. They are also known to mess with your hormones and are harmful to fish and other wildlife when dispensed down the drain and into our waterways.

SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES)

Are detergents that make products foam, lather and bubble. Reportedly found in 90% of personal-care products that foam (e.g. cleansers, shampoos etc.).

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES

Anything that is synthetic or artificial should always raise a red flag! These are made up of hundreds to thousands of different ingredients not listed on the label, so you are never sure what you are actually being exposed to. Commonly found in cosmetic and skincare products.

Spooked? Well don’t worry, nowadays we’re spoilt with choice when it comes to reducing chemicals in your skincare routine. However, beware of greenwashing! You also want to stick to products that really work and are tested.
