The Beauty of Maternity

During your pregnancy, you will experience a number of changes, but the most common of all is the changes to your skin. As you start to make healthy lifestyle changes for you and your baby, you might want to alter your skincare routine too to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

This is especially important for dealing with those pesky stretch marks, which are a concern for many women expecting.

How to prevent stretch marks?

The best way to take care of your skin whilst pregnant and avoid long-term stretch marks is to prevent their development. You can start avoiding pregnancy stretch marks weeks before birth by using adequate products and by making sure you look after your skin.

Stretch marks appear because of two factors: increased pressure on the skin (stretching linked to weight gain or pregnancy) and the overproduction of hormones, often during puberty or pregnancy.

Stretch marks look like little scars on the surface of the skin. To begin with, they are a mix of red and purple. Over time they turn into white ridges. Anti-stretch mark treatments re-establish the elasticity of the skin.

It’s often difficult to get rid of these little fissures caused by pregnancy. Targeted beauty care however, can contribute to softening these pregnancy stretch marks and making them less visible.

Given your body loses its firmness and tone over the course of the 9 months of pregnancy, it’s so important to replenish and restore your skin. The number one treatment we suggest doing at home is dry brushing, followed by exfoliating. Regular dry brushing increases blood flow and the production of collagen fibres. This stimulates the elasticity and firmness of the skin, which then becomes soft, tight and smooth.

Suited to all skin types, exfoliation also eliminates impurities and dead skin cells. This will also improve the elasticity of your skin and leaves you with a feeling of freshness and well-being.

How often should you dry brush and exfoliate?

Every 27 days the cells of your epidermis regenerate. New cells are born every day in the lower layers of the skin and move up to the surface where they are naturally eliminated. To facilitate the process, we suggest dry brushing and exfoliating at least once a week.

With age, the regeneration process slows down. Using a body exfoliator allows you to get rid of those dead cells. So, whilst you develop good skincare habits whilst pregnant, it’s important to continue your regimen into the future.

Pregnancy safe skincare is so important, for the baby’s health and the mother’s peace of mind. Given our skin absorbs 60-80% of what we apply, most women adopt a chemical-free skin care regimen during this time. The aim being to eliminate the harsh ingredients found in traditional skincare products.
